Transform Sunshine into shorts

Perfect for warm weather, denim shorts are a timeless basic for the modern wardrobe. In our sewing pattern catalogue, we don’t yet have any denim shorts. But with a simple modification to the I AM Sunshine pattern, you can turn your jeans into shorts. Whether you’re a seasoned sewer or just starting out, this guide shows you how to shorten the pattern to create the perfect pair of shorts for your wardrobe using two examples. Let’s get started!

The original I AM Sunshine pattern

With the I AM Sunshine sewing pattern you can sew two types of jeans: straight leg and slouchy. With a high waist and classic denim details, the I AM Sunshine trousers offer a contemporary yet timeless look. This pattern not only includes an illustrated instruction booklet, but also a step-by-step guide with multiple photos for each step on our blog, so it’s accessible to all sewers, whatever your level.

How to shorten the pattern for sewing shorts

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare your pattern pieces:
    • Start by cutting the pattern pieces to your size.
  2. Measure and mark:
    • Example 1 – Slouchy leg shorts: using a Japanese ruler, shorten the Front leg and Back leg pattern pieces by 23 1/2” (60 cm) from the bottom. Make sure the line is parallel to the original pattern.
    • Example 2 – Straight-leg knee-length shorts: using a Japanese ruler, shorten the Front Leg and Back Leg pattern pieces by 15 3/4” (40 cm) from the bottom. Make sure the line is parallel to the original pattern.
    • Of course, depending on the look you want to achieve, don’t hesitate to adjust the length. If you don’t know the length you want in advance, then cut as shown in example 2 and test the length before hemming your shorts.
  3. Calculate the yardage:
    • On your cutting table, or alternatively on the floor, create an L shape using rulers, tape measures or washi tape. As this pattern is cut by folding the fabric to get mirrored pieces, the bottom of the L should be half the width of your fabric (70 cm for a 140 cm wide fabric or 75 cm for a 150 cm wide fabric), and the side/length of the L corresponds to the fold of the fabric.
    • Place your pattern pieces so that the grainline runs parallel to the length of the L.
    • Make sure that the pieces to be cut on the fold are positioned against the side/length of the L (where the fabric would be folded).
    • Optimise the placement of all the parts within the limits of the L shape.
    • Measure the final length of the L to determine the yardage required.
    • Take a photo to refer to when cutting.
    • Be sure to buy extra fabric to allow for shrinkage when washing.
  4. Sew your shorts:
    • Once you’ve modified your pattern, follow the original sewing instructions included in your booklet. The construction process remains the same – easy, isn’t it?
