An unforgettable experience
Imagine yourself wandering the little streets of a magnificent middle-age village in Burgundy full of romantic 15th century houses.
You stop in front of the old college, excited to finally be here. You slowly walk up the Burgundy limestone staircase and reach the first floor overlooking the roofs of the village. You enter the studio with its lovely pink painted walls and blackboards. Childhood memories come rushing back but this time, the walls are full of drawings you recognise: sewing patterns. Inside the classroom everything is ready for you: the sewing machines and overlockers are neatly aligned, the ironing boards are waiting and the cutting tables are tactfully staggered over the workshop studio.
You will come back to this room each morning to learn the technique, and each afternoon to put into practice what you have just learned and once all of this is done, you can even carry on and sew what makes you happy.
On your free time, you love longing the river and walking through the forest before treating yourself to this lovely region’s wines and delicacies.

Course outline
Pattern cutting won’t have any secrets for you anymore.
At the end of this training course, you will have created 3 personal patterns. You will be able to create all your skirts, tops, shirts, dresses, sleeves and collars. You will also have knowledge to construct other basic block patterns (trousers, jackets, coat) and transform them as you’d like.
First part – 9 days
BASIC SKIRT BLOCK PATTERN
- Taking measurements on body
- Construction of the basic skirt block pattern based on body measurements
- Dart manipulations and pivot technics for skirts
- Manipulation of the basic skirt block pattern (14 in total)
- Applying all the transformation technics and dart pivot manipulation for creating personal skirt patterns
- Pattern drafting: seam allowances, adding information, notches…
- Construction of a waistband
- Creation of a skirt using the technics learnt
- Sewing a toile of your personal project, fitting on the body and adjusting accordingly
BASIC BODICE BLOCK PATTERN
- Construction of the basic bodice block pattern based on body measurements
- Dart manipulations and pivot technics for skirts
Second part – 9 days
BASIC BODICE BLOCK PATTERN
- Transformations of the basic bodice block pattern (16 in total)
- Applying all the transformation technics and dart pivot manipulation for creating personal bodice pattern
- Enlargement depending on the model you are designing
- Design of a personal sleeveless top pattern without collar
- Sewing a toile of your personal project, fitting on the body and adjusting accordingly
- Construction of a sleeve basic block pattern
- Transformation of sleeves
- Construction of collars (classic shirt collar, Mandarin collar, Peter-Pan collar and others…)
- Creation of a personal pattern of a top or dress with sleeves and collar
- Sewing a toile of your personal project, fitting on the body and adjusting accordingly
The curriculum is similar the one in a first year styling/fashion schools. You will learn technics step by steps and easily.
As mentioned above, with all this knowledge, you will have created 3 personal patterns. You will be able to create all your skirts, tops, shirts, dresses, sleeves and collars. You will also have knowledge to construct other basic block patterns (trousers, jackets, coat) and transform them as you’d like. You’ll also be able to create personalised blocks for family and friends.
The studio
The training course will take place in a classroom of the old college. It is more than 50 m2 and is equipped with:
- 8 PFAFF Passport 3.0 sewing machines
- 4 PFAFF Hobbylock 2.5 overlockers
- 4 big cutting tables
- 2 ironing stations
- A locker area to put your personal belongings
- All sewing equipment: scissors, pins, threads snips, measuring tape, Japanese rulers, curve rulers, 1m rulers, tailor chalks, white and black threads…
The studio is located in the old college built in the XVth century.
Come with your project too as the studio is open from 9am to 9pm everyday.

The tutor
Marie-Emilienne is the founder and designer of I AM Patterns. Before founding I AM Patterns she’s taught pattern-making in international schools in Paris and Shanghai for over 8 years.
With this pattern cutting training course she brings together her 2 passions: sewing and transmission of knowledge to help you create all the clothes you’ve ever imagined.
The village
Classified as one of the 100 most beautiful village of France, Noyers-sur-Serein is located in Burgundy. A region with a rich history and heritage. As soon as you enter Noyers, you feel like time has been standing still for centuries. Walking through the narrow paved streets, longing the river or the forest, or even sipping one of the region’s internationally known wines, there’s many ways of enjoying life in Noyers-sur-Serein.
Sewing level
You don’t need to have prior knowledge of patternmaking but you need to have a good understanding of the construction of a garment. This knowledge can be acquired by sewing as many clothes as possible ahead of the training course.
